According to Zitron, the lack of a clear path to profitability and high operating expenses put the company in a difficult position. Recent reports suggest that OpenAI could incur losses of up to $5 billion in 2024, potentially risking its liquidity within 12 months. Zitron believes that to “survive” beyond 2026, OpenAI will require an unprecedented volume of funding for a startup.

Zitron emphasized the importance of OpenAI achieving a significant technological breakthrough to reduce the development costs of its GPT models. He stated that there must be a technological advancement that drastically cuts operating costs, or any other model that will follow. Tarun Mehta, CEO of Ather Energy, downplayed rumors of financial crisis, comparing the situation to Uber, which sustained much higher capital losses. “OpenAI is probably one of the most significant startups in recent times,” said Mehta, assuring that “everything will be fine.”

A recent positive turn for OpenAI came when Elon Musk withdrew a lawsuit against the company and its CEO, Sam Altman. The lawsuit accused OpenAI of deviating from its original mission to develop technology for the common good rather than for profit.
